hey loves!

Ok, I need you guys to help a sistah out.

I have never done a craft show before because, well, 98% of the craft shows on long island are pretty "kitsch" meaning they involve very "folk" looking stuff.

Nothing against folk, but lawn ornaments are really my thang.

But I finally found an indie craft fair that is more my speed, I sent in the application and *fingers crossed* they accept me.

This is where you all come in.

I am inventory illiterate. I have never ever ever done any type of craft show before. Basically I know that I sould:

• Have a price sheet available on my table

• A Banner with my shop name

• Business cards

• Get a fancy square for credit card payments

• bring food

• have a ton of singles

• find a clever way to display my products

• have bags for people to put their swag in once purchased

I was wondering if there way anything I was missing? A BIG thing I am having a hard time with is how much inventory does one bring?? I would be selling:

• Necklaces

• Plushies

• Prints

I am unsure how many styles of each thing to bring as well as how many quantities of each.

For example: Do I bring 15 different print styles in quantity of 10 so there are 150 total?

GAAAAH please help! The fair would be going on from 11am-7pm for 2 days.

Thanks in advance, if I could give you all a Mercedes I would.

Hello Lovelies!

I am so excited to share this blog post with you! Lauren from The Elephant Trunk approached me a few weeks back about doing a linky party involving beauty products. Of course I was all over this like white on rice! We reached out to Heather of Just Lovely Things as well and she too would be co-hosting with us (can this linky party get any radder? Me thinks not)

Basically each week will be a different "prompt", for example one week will be dedicated to "Hair Care Products" where another week might be "Make Up Brushes".

In the post we would mention our favorite product (uh, duh) what we are "starting out with" (for example: If we are talking about hair products I would mention that I like this product for my non-dyed, straight, thin hair. That way other people with the same hair type as me can potentially use the product) and we would mention why we love the product and why it works best for us and our needs.

The reason for this link up party is to get the word out about other beauty products that maybe you didn't know existed or maybe to try out a different brand. Perhaps you have no clue what kind of anti-frizz serum to use on your curly hair or maybe your favorite foundation in the world has been discontinued (let's be honest, its a sad sad day when your go-to eye shadow bites the dust and falls into the retail black hole never to be sold ever again) This party will allow you to see what else is out there! I've been seeing these pop up all over and I was tagged by Heather, so of course I'm going to play!

Here are the rules:

11 Random Things:

1. My hair color is all natural. I used to dye my hair all the time. I recently stopped so that I can see when I start to go gray (true story) I'm 27 now and holding strong! But if bub continues to keep leaving his boots all over the apartment, hide his "car repair manuals" under the covers at the foot of my bed, thinks that cookies are an acceptable dinner meal & shooting me with nurf guns it might come sooner than later.

2. I MUST have "paper napkins" given to me at a restaurant while eating. I feel like wiping my hands on a "fabric" napkin does nothing for me.

3. Whenever I walk into any store I will always bee line it towards the back to the clearance section. Mama loves to save money.

4. I check to make sure I unplugged my flat iron at least 5 times before I leave the apartment. Its one of the few things I am absolutely OCD about. I will even stare at it for a good minute seeing it NOT plugged in, walk away and think "Ya know I bet you there is SOME WAY the flat iron magically got plugged in again…" then go back and check. Again.

5. Wanna know why my hair is super long? I will be donating it soon! I am letting my hair grow to Guinness world records lengths first so when I hack off the 9" my hair is still fairly long. The only awkward thing is when I get out of the shower my hair "tickles" my butt. It took me a while to figure out it was my hair and not a spider--by the way doing the "OMG THERE IS A SPIDER ON ME!" dance while naked and wet is not fun. You know what dance I'm talking about.

6. I think about death way more than the average person should. Let me clarify, I am not suicidal! I meant that I think about what happens "after you die" way too much. It freaks me out and gives me heart palpitations.

7. I write neater on a diagonal then on a straight line

8. One year bub and I had a hard time figuring out what to be for halloween. This of course led to an argument (duh). In a fit of fury and frustration I yelled "YA KNOW WHAT?! LETS BE PETER PAN AND TINKERBELL! CEPT I'LL BE PETER PAN AND YOU CAN BE TINKERBELL!" it was the best couples costume ever.

9. I dont tan. I have never been tan. I don't know what I would look like with a tan, and thats kinda sad to me. Worst.Italian.Ever.

10. My eyes are made out of 3 colors. They are outlined in gray, green is the main color with flecks of brown.

11. I miss the old "facebook" where it wasn't intrusive. I thought it was a nice way for people to keep in touch but STILL talk to each other to know what is going on in their lives. I worry facebook for the younger generation is going to kill them of any and all social skills. I am SO HAPPY it was not around while I was in high school, it first came out when I was in college but like I said back then it was minimal and no where near how it is today (annnnd my first "WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE" Moment is sponsored by ginkgo)

And.. the 11 questions Heather wants me to answer:
1- Sweet or Sour? how bout both because I order the sweet and sour chicken at chinese food places! (Bada Bum!) (yeah, I just "drum beat" myself) (im not proud of this)

2- What is your favorite kind of music? Going to be totally honest here, I'm not really a "music" person. I'll listen to the pop station or country station but I dont keep up with the newest thang. Although LMFAO's "sexy and I know it" is fun to "wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle" to

3- Where do you see yourself personally in 5 years? In 5 years I hope to at least be engaged (lord willing) have a pup named Hercules, make Yellow Heart Art my only source of income, be a home owner, and finally figure out how to plant seedless watermelon.

4- Do you know any other languages besides english? I know the language of the sailor. AKA I have a potty mouth.

5- What is your biggest pet peeve of all time? People who are always late. I mean COME ON *always* late? I always tell those people to meet me 1/2 hour earlier than planned so they come "on time"

6- Have you ever been in a fight and thrown something made of glass at someone, like they do in the movies? HA! LOVE this question! And no, I haven't. The closest thing I have come to this was one time in my "clubbing" days (yes, I live on Long Island, its what we did for fun in college ok?? JUDGE ME!) I was "seeing" this guy who was a few years older than me (that's all you're getting a "few" years ha!) My friend Heather was seeing his Friend at the time too, so it worked out perfectly whenever me and Heather wanted to go to the club to see this guy and his friend. The 4 of us planned to meet up at the club, but the 2 dudes were COMPLETELY ignoring heather and I. They made no effort to talk to us the entire night. When I found "my dude" huddled between 4 tall gorgeous blondes I took my dumpy 5' 3" self over there, got in the center of the huddle, got in his face and said "DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND TAKE MY NUMBER OUT OF YOUR PHONE" I then threw a drink at him and walked away. Best moment ever.

7- Reincarnation: What do you come back as? I want to come back as a successful boy band member. I want to know what it feels like to have women flock all over me and be a bagillionare for singing songs about sharing ice cream and going to the mall.

look at me rocking out, total boy band member status right there. Also? I own at guitar hero. Ok, thats a lie.

8- If you could go back to any age you were and live it again, how old would you be & why? HANDS DOWN 22. You were past that exciting "WOOOO I'm 21!" Phase, and you were still in college and kind of an "adult" but not totally one quite yet. I frekkin LOVED IT. I was taking all graphic design and art classes at the time so my entire day consisted of creating things FOR GRADES (uhhh AWESOME) during "breaks" between classes my friend Erin and I would go back to her dorm room and make music videos. I also worked part time at Abercrombie and used my discount to buy sweet clothes. Damn, life was awesome.

9- Cats or Dogs? dogs hands down. I get freaked out by the way cats stare at me, they look like their plotting the best way to kill me while i'm sleeping or something.

10- Have any guilty pleasures? I watch family guy marathons on TBS. I know I know you can judge me, this time I totally deserve it.

Rue Magazine Featured Us!

Um you guys, I don't even know what to say.

I noticed a TON Of new "hearts" in my shop on Etsy for my Diamond Plushies. I also was getting a ton of email inquiries about them.

I didn't think anything of it since I notice at times a random item from my shop will be the "it" item of the week. That was until I got a message on etsy that said "HEY! are you restocking these diamond plushies? I Saw them on Rue".

Hold.The.Effin.Phone.

I'm thinking to myself "there is no way this chick means Rue Magazine...."

Sure enough staring back at me on Page 12 of their Spring Edition magazine was one of my diamond plushies.

I am so incredibly honored to be up there with the likes of J Crew, Madewell, Crate & Barrel etc

And can't you just die from this color combo they chose?!

Works in Progress! The Spring Fling Edition

whoa it is has been a while since I showed you all some works in progress designs of mine!

Bad Leonora, what is WRONG with you?!

Sorry, I tend to beat myself up sometimes. But we're good now.

As you all know Jessica of Jessica N Designs is one of my home girls. I own quite a bit of her ballin' hand stamped pieces. Her quality and customer service is spot on.

So when she asked me last year to design a handmade holiday banner for her I was all like "girl, please, let's do this".

She loved it so much that she asked me to help her with her "Spring Fling Gift Guide" banner as well!

Doesn't that banner design make ya wanna frolic in a field barefoot while collecting dandy lions and making a dandy lion tiara out of them? (Side Note: Was I the only one who was mind blown when they found out that dandy lions were weeds? No? Just me? Got it.)

Bee Tee Dubs, I was part of Jessica's handmade holiday gift guide back in Decemeber. Basically its like an "online catalog" show casing your handmade goods. I did get a lot of traffic to my shop, if you are interested in being a part of Jessica's spring gift guide then holla at her!

iPhone/Smart Phone Photography Taken to the Next Level

As some of you may or may not know I actually love photography. Sometimes its just hard to find the time to dust off my 'ol Canon Rebel DSLR and get out there and take some way cool artistic photos. It's also kinda bulky to travel with so on the rare occasion that I do travel I don't even bring it with me.

This really bums me out because there are times when I see a suh-weet photo opp but have no way of capturing it.

Simple solution? Use your iPhone.

Now do not get me wrong, I am not saying that your iPhone or Smart Phone should replace your DSLR -or- that anyone with an "iPhone" is declared Ansel Adams. BUT you DO always have your phone on you and it does have a pretty decent lens on it.

Attempting New Things (how to sew a retro deer & cook a bad ass dish)

This weekend was a weekend full of experimenting! I figured I had a whole 3 day weekend to myself why not step up my game a bit and try new things.

I kicked it old school this weekend by channeling 7th grade "home economics" me and attempt to sew a retro deer.

After posting this picture on Insta Gram and Twitter I was so overwhelmed by all the positive responses! But, unfortunately this lil guy is not a new business adventure, I just wanted to see if I could pull it off.

What you don't know is:
-this fella took me 3 frekkin hours to make
-lost count of the numbers of times I stabbed myself
-I used the ears from the pattern which would have been great if it didn't make my deer look like Yoda and Dumbo did the horizontal tango and had a baby, so I had to take apart the ears and improvise.
-I used a pretty thick weight felt which was next to impossible to turn my deer right side out to stuff it. I had to jab scissor blades into the neck and legs of this thing to poke them out-it was a borderline horror show, I even had to look away at one point, the violence was too much.
-speaking of the neck how the HECK does one sew a head onto a neck? Needless to say there is a reason why bub dubbed this guy "Franken-Deer", it looks like there is a series of bolts around its neck keeping it in place. I think it adds whimsy, bub thinks its creepy. He might be right but I will never admit that to him.
-for round 2 I'm going to staple and hot glue the hell out of this thing and call it a day.

If you too want to stab yourself multiple times and curse repeatedly to yourself over and over again then you can find the pattern to this little guy over here and make one yourself! Our deers can get together for a play date.

Also another venture I decided to tackle this weekend was trying a new crockpot recipe. I decided to give this recipe a go.

and can I tell you? It.was.EPIC. Unlike my deer I will be making this dish again.

-6 chicken breasts
-salsa
-taco seasoning
-6-8 hours on low in the crock pot
-bada bing

The only bummer about this dish is that it is NOT "guest" friendly. When I put the pulled chicken and salsa mixture into the burrito shells and rolled them up they quickly started to leak. Thats why I don't have my own pics here, bub and I had to woof down these burritos before they drowned in their own glorious slow cooked juices.

It was so messy that after each bite we had to take a bath.

But it officially made it into the dinner rotation, I proudly pat myself on the back.

Also there is something else you need to know about me. I am going to ban myself from any and all pet stores from here on out (ok thats a bold face lie) the problem is sometimes I think I'm snow white and want to frolic in a field full of animals while I sing to them all and twirl around in a giant circle all day long. Seriously, can that be my day job? "animal-singer-twirler-arounder"? No? it can't? Well then…

Ok, back to my story. Bub and I are HA-UGE dog lovers. Unfortunately our land lord won't allow us to have a dog which is completely understandable. Since bub flat out refuses to take me to the puppy store since he knows point blank a puppy or 5 will "accidentally" end up in my coat jacket, purse and hat. As a compromise he takes me to PetCo so we can play with the birds.

Well, this planned backfired on him as well. While playing with the birds I flashed bub that look. That "OHMYGODCANWEPLEASETAKEABIRDHOMEIPROMISETOLOVEITFOREVERANDEVERRRRR" look.

He spoke to our landlord and she was on Team Bird. So yesterday we picked out the cutest pearl cockatiel and are picking him up today! (Ok well we dont know if its a HE or a SHE since its too young to tell, apparently birdie parts aren't on the outside of their body) I have already spoiled the heck out of this bird since I want to buy it a mini basketball court and a sweater vest. Bub is immediately regretting this decision. I mean come on, it's not like I'm getting matching sweater vests and already planning our 2012 christmas card….yet

I gave in to colored denim

Hello Loves! I know I have been MIA on my blog, but it's because I have been brewing up new designs for the shop and collaborating on some projects with 2 lovely ladies. More deets on that in the future ;) I know, I'm so cryptic sometimes.

But if you all follow me on the twitter (do you think we should start calling twitter "The" Twitter? Like, ya know, kick it old school like how facebook used to be "The" facebook? No? Ok, good idea, I didn't like it either) but anyway I asked a question yesterday in regards to colored denim.

I want to so badly hop on this band wagon and be all like "hey guys! Look at my ass! ITS GREEN!"

But it scares me.

It scares me a lot.

I'm pretty sure I'll give into this trend, I gave into capris (something bout awkwardly cropped pants freaked me out too, I really hate it when my ankles are cold.) I gave into leggings and I gave into jeggings (oooo jeggings how I am so glad you came into my life--it's like wearing the "black tie" version of sweat pants. Can someone point me in the direction of the lovely person who invented jeggings? Pretty sure we need to make out)

I was shocked with how many of you were on "TEAM COLORED PANTS!". You all were so encouraging and really wanted me to ride the colored pant train.

You guys, here is my huge announcement. Can I ask that all cell phones and electronic devices be turned off at this time while I tell you all something super exciting?

Make Up Tutorial! Get rid of dark circles

A while ago I tweeted out there in twitter land about potentially posting a vlog about what I do to get rid of my dark under-eye circles.

No joke they.are.BAD.

So bad that everyone kept saying "um hey ya got some mascara under your eyes"

and I had to be all like "no, thats just my face, thanks for pointing it out".

Then it got real awkward real fast, so I would always have to throw in some random comment bout the NY Yankees to change the subject (I dont even watch baseball)

To my surprised a TON of you wanted a vlog. I was stoked at first but then i was all like "oh, hey, now I gotta show everyone my bags".

As I started to warm up to the idea of showing you guys what-mah-mommy-gave-me I realized that I don't have any good "video recording equipment". You wouldn't be able to really notice a "before" and "after" difference since the quality is so bad.

So instead I am just going to go over my routine step by step here and hopefully that helps!

I am using specific products here, I have found these products to work the best for me. I have used many different brands of concealers and foundations, so this is why I am being so specific. The below products are pricy BUT they do work. I have found that when I use the cheaper cosmetics I end up reapplying my makeup all day and end up spending the same amount on makeup since I have to refill it more than the expensive brand that lasts all day. Do you smell what I am stepping in?

Here is your arsenal of supplies:

1 - MAC PREP + PRIME SKIN

2 - MAC Studio Finish Concealer

3 - Double sided concealer brush

(I got mine at Sephora, this will be used for concealer ONLY)

4 - Single sided foundation brush

(this will be used for powder foundation only)

5 - Bare Minerals Foundation Powder

6 - Urban Decay Up All Night Makeup Setting Spray

Step One:
Take your MAC Prep + Prime and place a dot size amount on your index finger and place under your eyes. Make sure all the primer is soaked into your skin. This is important because this primer will allow your concealer to go on your face smoothly. If you skip this step your concealer will go under your eyes blotchy.

Step Two:
Take your double sided concealer brush and use the smaller end inside your Mac Studio Finish Concealer. Get some concealer on your brush and swoop it under your eyes. Do not worry if you look like a gnarly football player, we will fix this. For now just go crazy and apply, apply, APPLY. Do not worry about blending it into your skin just yet, we just want to get the make up on there.

Step Three:
Ok, now put down the brush because I think you went overboard there with the concealer (ha, just kidding, you look great Tom Brady) Now take that same double sided brush and flip it around to the big end. In a downward motion place the brush under your eyes where you went all crazy on your concealer and blend it into the tops of your cheeks. Do this lightly, you don't want to remove the concealer, you just want to blend it into the rest of your skin. IMPORTANT: do not cheap out on the brush here ladies. I one time bought a cheap-o brush and ended up with 1/2 of the bristles on my face. It is worth the investment.

Step Four:
This step might not be necessary for you but I like to take my pinky "pad" and run it along my bottom lash line in case I have a "harsh edge" from the concealer from where my lash line meets my skin under the eye. This just helps soften any harsh edges from the concealer.

Step Five:
Take your single sided foundation brush and dab that into the Bare Minerals Foundation Powder (if you wanted to swap out your make up and use a cheaper version of powder foundation then I give you permission to use it here since the point of this step is to just set the concealer) Take your foundation brush that has your powder foundation on it and dab it on top of the concealer that is under your eyes. DO NOT RUB IT ON you want to "dab" it on. This will help prevent any creasing that might happen. I used to skip this step thinking it was pointless but its kind of a big deal. Also? DO NOT MIX YOUR CONCEALER BRUSHES AND YOUR POWDER BRUSHES. Concealer is, well, for lack of a better term "creamy and wet" you dont want to put a wet brush into a powder foundation or else you will get some gnarly clump concoction of grossness. Do yourself a favor and invest in 2 separate brushes.

Step Six:
You can skip this part if you want, but I figured I spent so much time on my eyes I want it to last haha. I invested in Urban Decay's "up all night make up setting spray". Basically it makes your makeup stay put. Now I know what you're thinking "Umm, hey there Leonora, how do you propose I get this make up setting spray under my eyes if I have to leave my eyes open to spray it…" Well glad you asked. Here is my trick--I take an old blush brush that I dont use anymore, spritz the top of the blush brush with the Setting Spray, then dab it under my eyes! Again DONT RUB IT UNDER you will smear off all your hard work. Bada bing now your dark circles will stay hidden under your concealer for at least 16 hours (whose better than you baby?) Extra Bonus? You can use this stuff for ALL your make up! Squirt some on a Q-Tip and dab onto your eye liner for all day stay! Spray on your face after using some blush so they dont wear off, this product is an AMAZING investment.

I am back in the cool kids club (and a winner)

A few years back I *was* in the cool kids club but I had to resign due to an expensive cell phone bill.

What was the cool kids club you ask?

It was a club where you had an iPhone and life was glorious.

I had at&t back in the day but bubs had verizon. We took our relationship to the next level and did a family plan.

Which is ironic cause we're not a family.

So I had to give up the iPhone and get a droid since verizon didn't have the iPhone then.

Ugh, just typing that makes me wanna go into fetal position and cry.

See Bub THIS is how much I love you.

Bub and I had to replace our droids 3 (yes 3) times over the course of a year and a 1/2 of owning those piece of crap phones. So together we had 6 droids.

When time #4 came around for me to replace the droid (again) I threw a hissy fit and got my iPhone back

(rejoice)

my droid is currently being used as a coaster. I plan to chuck it out a window going 60mph on the interstate soon. You are are invited to watch or use it as a target for skeet shooting.

Shop's One Year Anniversary! What I've learned and Some Tips for Your Business

((I held off posting this blog post since on January 18th since Swag Swap Week was going on and I didn't want to take away from all the awesome giveaways!))

So, as of January 18th 2012 Yellow Heart Art has been open for an ENTIRE YEAR. Can you, like, believe it?

Looking back I can't even believe I made myself open up shop. I was scurred--super scurred. What if no one buys anything? What if I invest all this moola and its a huge flop? What if people buy my stuff, get it, then wanna return it? Wait, how the heck do I ship these things? How much does shipping cost? How in the world am I going to design all these graphics, print them, ship them AND work full time?!

aaand exhale.

I went into Yellow Heart Art 100% completely BLIND.

When I tell you I had NO IDEA what I was doing I am not lying.

And heck, I am still learning. In fact towards the bottom of this post I even fill ya in on some tips and tricks to your growing business based on my own experiences.

Here are some milestones that make me look back and smile and junk:

January 18th 2011: Opened up shop! And whoa I even made a sale 5 minutes after listing an item! (I know, I'm so bad ass right?) (wrong) (turns out the buyer was Bub under an "alias" name so I wouldn't know it was him) (he has been by far my biggest supporter through this entire journey)

January 20th: Made 1st OFFICIAL sale that wasn't bub. Had heart palpitations. Didn't know what to do. Shipped item. Prayed it got there. And exhaled.

February: Amy bought 2 prints from me (this was before Amy and I were BFFs, in fact this is how we met) (till this day I am shocked homegirl bought 2 prints from a lil no-name shop that only had, like, 3 sales) (but she believed) (and she's awesome) (like, really really awesome) we talked via Etsy convo. She got my prints. She was in love. I did my first ever giveaway on her blog. We have been besties ever since.

March: Saw some blogs showcasing my art work. One said blog was Lindsay. While scouring her blog I found that she had featured oh, sweet joy! on there. So I contacted Kim and asked about advertising. I did my 1st advertising with Kim for 3 months.

April: Opened up our facebook page and caved in and joined Twitter. I tweeted about stuff like what I ate for breakfast and that bub makes me wanna rip out my hair -- but had no clue what in the world I was doing. Also? bub gave me yellowheartart.com as a birthday present. (If anyone knows any HTML please help us out? As you can see that page has not been updated since, well, April)

May: Started Yellow Heart Art, the blog. Again, no clue what I was doing. (this seems to be a common theme)

June: Introduced necklaces into the shop. HOLY to the COW did these necklaces drive.me.BONKERS. They took me a few months to perfect. I finally decided to ditch them due to the material I was using causing too many imperfections in the necklaces. Only about 30% of the necklaces I made were "sell-able". This was my first "sellers mistake" and lost some money on these. But hey, it was a learning experience and I don't regret it!

July: Getting a ton of requests for freelance work!

August: Milk and Honey in Huntington Village (New York) started selling our necklaces in their brick and mortar shop.

September-November: Due to moving into a new apartment the shop had to be put on hold for 3 months. The shop was left open during this time and I had so many people buy prints from me knowing they would have to wait months for them to show up. I am truly amazed at how patient everyone was with me during this transition. We also started our Newsletter as a way for people to keep up with what was going on with our vacation and to get exclusive discount codes.

November: Yellow Heart Art re-opened! I introduced a new line of "Squishable Art" where I turned my artwork into fun silhouetted pillows. Amy also suggested that I not give up on my necklace adventure and she recommended that I put my original designs on fabric and make fabric pendants.

December: Etsy administration contacted me and wanted to feature one of my "Squishable Art Camera Pillows" in the Huffington Post. This was my first ever "legit" press. I also introduced to the shop fabric broaches and hair clips.

So here we are, one year later, I have made approx. 400 sales and have worked with a number of you guys on designing branding for your blogs or shops.

I am truly amazed at where I am and all the wonderful ladies I have "met". When I opened up shop I thought it was just going to be a shop and nothing more. I didn't think at all that I was going to make solid friendships and interact with people on an intimate level.

Here are some things I've learned along the way (tips for your growing business):
(psst this is all based on my personal experience, also if you dont have a shop read on anyway and see what the process is like when you buy handmade from someone :)

• You.Are.Everything. You are the shipping department, customer service, the accountant, the designer, the marketing department, public relations, the inventory tracker, the purchasing agent, the photographer, the writer and the President of your company (are you overwhelmed yet?).

• "You Are The Shipping Department" make sure you know how you are shipping your items before you list them and how much it will cost. Make sure you know how much they weigh and that you have enough items on hand to get you by for at least the first 20 sales you make. I do all my shipping through paypal. For an extra .19c you can add "delivery confirmation". Do it. It is the best .19c you will EVER spend. Also some box sizing dimensions *could* cost more money, you could call your postal service and tell them what you are shipping and they can direct you to the most cost effective way to ship something.

• "You Are Customer Service" you will get a lot of requests. People will ask if things come in different colors, if they buy X amount can they get a discount, where is their package, when will it ship, if you can make it in a different size etc. Always be polite and answer emails with in timely fashion. If you are uncomfortable with a request from a client then be honest with them, don't ever commit to something you don't think you will be able to make look great. There are times when someone wants me to design their blog but the "look" they want isn't my "style". I'll either direct them to another designer or show them something in *my* style to see if they like it.

• "You Are The Accounting Department" keep track of all your receipts! These can be written off for your taxes. I am a little unsure how in the world to do this since I am getting my taxes done for the 1st time ever on this business so, umm, if you can help *me* that would be awesome ha! But yeah. keep those receipts.

• "You Are The Designer" even though my job title literally has the word "Designer" in it (Graphic Designer) you, too, are the "designer" of your products. Don't ever down right steal someone's product. You want to be known for what you do that makes YOU stand out. If everyone just copied everyone then there would be no "Abercombie", "Anthropologie" or "Express". Even though those are all clothing companies the look of their clothes are different and unique. You could buy a T-shirt in all 3 of these stores, but they won't have the same style (Abercrombie Ts are distressed and college looking, Anthropologie Ts are usually classy with a vintage pattern and Express Ts are usually meant for a night out on the town)

Always try to come up with new products or different designs at least every season--loyal customers will want something fresh and new to see every now and then. A simple change can be offering a best seller in more color choices!

• "You Are Public Relations" put yourself out there by having a facebook page, twitter account, pinterest, blog newsletter etc. Social media is your friend (AND its FREE advertising!). On twitter don't just copy and paste links to your products, make sure you talk about your day and interact with people as well. I get turned off when I follow someone and all they do is promote themselves. I love promoting other shops on social media sites as well. It helps build community and friendships. This is a great avenue to give your customers product sneak peaks, coupon codes and an opportunity to get to know you on a more personal "human" level.

• "You Are The Marketing Department" you can't just rely on Etsy (or big cartel, or store envy) to get your name out there. YOU need to market yourself. In my personal experience I have found that doing a giveaway on a blog was more beneficial than having just static ad space on someone's side bar. If you advertise on a blog make sure they offer to do a blog post about you and your products. Try to offer coupon codes, people might not want to commit to your product right away so give them the option to test the waters at a discounted price. Also, have a solid "look" to your business. Branding is super important. Have a logo and a color scheme and stick to it. Use it on your websites, business cards and advertisements. When you think of your favorite clothing brand what do you think? Do they use a specific font or color scheme that you recognize? Keep that in mind, you want people to recognize your brand.

• "You Are The Inventory Tracker" this is a BIGGIE. I one time ran out of paper (I know, I sell prints, how does that happen?!) and had to spend more money than I wanted to by having paper over nighted to me so that I can get people their prints in the "2-5 business day" turn around time that I promised them. KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SUPPLIES.

• "You Are The Purchasing Agent" you will need to keep track and buy all of your items. Do you use kraft paper boxes for the necklaces you sell? Then do a google search for "Kraft paper boxes" and find which one is the best price. Be careful, don't sacrifice price for quality. People are paying YOU money for something YOU made, don't jip them. If you are uncomfortable standing behind something you made or purchased then don't sell it or use it. There is a fine line between being "frugal" and being "cheap". Starting up is hard because you don't want to invest so much money into your business that you put yourself in a bad financial situation of not having enough money to simply "live your life" and pay your bills. Figure out what is important and figure out what purchases you can hold off on until you get more sales. Me personally I invested my money in supplies to make my products & sturdy shipping materials. I waited to invest money in my "packaging" since I felt it was more important that my customers get a high quality product rather than a high quality product wrapped in pretty tissue paper, ribbon and stickers that just end up in the trash anyway. Once I was seeing a profit from sales that is when I branched out and spent more money on packaging, advertising and other things I was holding off on.

• "You Are The Photographer" you are in charge of photographing all your products! Not good with photography? No worries! ALWAYS use natural sunlight and place your products on a non busy background. Make sure to not include a lot of "clutter" in the photos, people might be confused as to what is for sale (example: if you are selling headbands and you take a photo of your headband next to some barrettes, earrings and hair clips the customer might think they are buying ALL those items. If you want to show the headband with all those items it is ok to do so as long as you have at least 2 or 3 photos of *just* the headband to help with confusion) Instagram is also great for social networking but NOT for product shots. Do not use wacky filters on your photos since it will change the color of your products.

• "You Are The Writer" those product descriptions don't just write themselves ya know. Make sure to include as much detail as you can about your product. If a customer has to take the time to contact you to ask you a question about the product it might cost you a sale. Make sure to include: The color of your item, the size, how it will be shipped, approx shipping timeline, how long it took you to make it and why they need it. Also make sure you have written out all your "shop policies" before diving into shop. What happens if an item gets lost in the mail? Can you make a return? How long will the item take to get to me? Ask questions that you would want to know when purchasing a product and answer it in your policies section. Whatever you do DO NOT COPY AND PASTE SOMEONE ELSE'S PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS OR POLICIES. This is a place for YOUR personality to come through not someone else's. I have had 4 etsy shops copy and paste my words before (it was verbatim, nothing was changed) and when I confronted these shops they all changed their product information to their own wording and were very apologetic. Trust me, in the long run it is worth it for you to do the work-other shop owners take the time to do it so have pride in YOUR shop and do what is right for YOU. You wouldn't like it if someone took your words that you took so long to write and copied and pasted it into their product descriptions--would you?

• Dont Skimp On Your Prices - even if you are just starting out do not make your items dirt cheap just for the sake of getting some sales. 2 reasons why this is no beuno: #1 - what if your inexpensive prices is the reason for your shop being "so popular"? Now you're stuck in between a rock and a hard place if you decide to up your prices once you see things are selling. Repeat customers will wonder why your item's pricing jumped so dramatically and if you were able to sell something at $5.00 why is it now worth $12.00? This isn't to say you can't gradually increase your prices, but you should never "double" them over night. #2 - You are basically saying that all your time, money spent on materials, and creativity isn't worth "anything". Now that isn't to say to make your prices so high that people will be turned off by it. But take into the account how much money in materials your product cost, how long it took you to make it, how much it will cost to ship, how much the shipping supplies cost, and how long it took you to come up with this concept. My prints for the most part are $20 because I print everything myself using my own super duper swanky printer and super duper inks (I refuse to use cheap inks and papers-the inks I use are archival meaning they won't fade if exposed to sunlight. Sure, I can use cheaper inks and sell my prints for $12, but then my customer's prints will start to fade with in a year. By that point the print isn't even worth $5 if the quality wont last) I also take the time to design all my original prints from scratch. Bottom line: you get what you pay for.

• People Like Free Things (and to feel special) - I absolutely love photojojo. I love their branding (upbeat, light and comical) and whenever I buy something from them they *always* give me a freebie. Sometimes its a mini dinosaur (ya know, those dinos you used to get at the dentist? Was I the only one whose dentist had a "treasure chest" full of epic swag?) or sometimes a mini camera key chain. Now don't blow your profits on "free things" to include in your packaging. Something as simple as a handwritten note or a flyer with an exclusive coupon code on it is enough to make you stand out. Your customers will hopefully appreciate the extra effort and most likely leave positive feedback (if you have an etsy), recommend you to friends or buy from you again in the future.

• Create realistic time lines - do you work full time like me? or are you a stay at home mom with 2 kids? If you can't commit to your business 24-7 then make sure to create time lines that you are comfortable with. Let your clients know that they will get their products shipped with in 2-5 business days once ordered (or maybe longer if you can't get to the PO in time) if you put it out there people will understand. Do not assume people are ok with "waiting", this information needs to be present before the buyer makes a purchase.

• Keep a Journal In your purse - get a mini mole skin and when an idea hits you WRITE IT DOWN. It doesn't have to be business related, it could be a color scheme that you think is rad or a new shape that you wanna try to re-work into your branding.

• Have your business cards on hand - if you're starting out for the first time do NOT buy 1,000 business cards off the bat. Maybe your shop changes direction when you see "what sells" and "what isn't selling" (perhaps you start off as selling jewelry buy now you strictly sell purses). Or maybe your shop got SO BIG that now you want a professional look done by a designer (so now you're branding looks different) whatever the case may be start off small. Get 50-100 cards made and promote the heck out of yourself by giving them away to whomever you can whenever you can (yep, that dude behind the counter at home depot wants your flower poppy headband). (Ok, maybe HE doesnt but he might have a wife who does!) (see?) (bet you had no clue where I was going with home depot man, huh?)

• MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF-this is a HUGE ONE for me. I didn't want Yellow Heart Art to be a chore. I wanted it to be FUN and an OUTLET for when life was getting too much for me. Since I work Full Time during the week (and also do freelance design work as well) on top of running Yellow Heart Art I told myself that I would NOT do any design work on the weekends. I needed time to unwind and just hang out with bubs. I create designs and print out prints during the week. Trust me, if you start to resent your shop because you have NO free time then you're going to stop doing what you love. It'll show in your products, customer service & how you promote yourself. If you ever find yourself overwhelmed simply take a break. Put the shop on temporary vacation mode and get back to it when you finally conquered everything.

As some of you may or may not know, SNAP Conference ((a craft and DIY social media conference)) is happening this April! I have always wanted to go to a creative conference but to be quite frank have never had the courage to board a plane by myself, land in an unfamiliar state and hang out with a bunch of lovely women who I have never ever met before in my life.

Sounds like the start of some CBS reality TV show.

Backtrack to girl scout camp circa 1991. My mom dumped me off at this camp full of a bunch of little girls where the main objective all day was to eat cookies, make macaroni necklaces and nap (ahhh the american dream). It would've been an epic adventure to most big eyed little girls sporting pig tails with giant pink bows but not for me. I was STOKED when the counselor exclaimed that it was time for hide and seek. I took off my bright blue daisy smock and found shelter behind a big 'ol tree. I hid and hid till they finally had to call my mom to come down and do a mini man hunt for me. In hindsight I probably gave my mom a mini coronary--but hey I wanted out. I popped out from behind of the tree, ran into my mom's arms and exclaimed TAKE ME HOOOOOME! I DONT LIKE IT HEEEEERE (I was a very dramatic little kid) (i think I missed my soap opera calling)

I wish I could tell you that was the first time I ever hid so my mom could come find me and "save me" from some kind of event but it wasn't. I locked myself in the closet at my dance studio all.the.time. until they called my mom to come down and get me out. She became very good at picking locks.

I'm sure not her proudest moment as a mom. One doesnt think they need to add "can get my daughter out of any confined space" to their mom resume.

I'm hoping SNAP conference will give me a chance to redeem 5 year old me. Since I can't leap back into the space time continuum and tell myself MAN UP YA LITTLE TURD! SERIOUSLY YOU GET TO EAT JUNK FOOD AND MAKE CRAFTS ALL FREKKIN DAY. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?! YEAH GO CRY TO YOUR MOMMY SEE WHERE THAT GETS YA.

Ok, maybe I can be a little easier on me.

But in all seriousness I want 2012 to be the year I finally stop being "a little turd" and start to be more adventurous! I want to be surrounded by amazing women who make macaroni necklaces inspire me all day.

My boyfriend is in the air force and even though I couldn't be more proud of him for serving our country I do get super jealous when I look at the map in our office full of brightly colored push pins of all the places he has been.

He has been to the arctic. Yeah, like, where santa hangs out for 364 days out of the year? He's been there. Seriously?! The Arctic?! I am NEVER going to see the arctic.

Granted I will never ever be able to compete with all the places he has been I just wanna be able to take a brightly colored push pin and be able to put it somewhere on that map that meant a lot to me.

Promise if I go & win a SNAP conf ticket I wont lock myself in a closet.

Pinhole Photography!

since I seem to be on a kick this week on "things I miss doing" (you can see yesterday and day before's post here) I figure why not keep it going!

I miss trying to come up with new ways to be creative.

Bubs got me a pinhole camera for xmas a while back

Basically its just a "shell" of cardboard with a teeeeeny tiiiiny pin size hole where you open it up to let light in and close it to stop the light.

It's basically how photos used to be taken back in the hay day where people would take creepy family photos super still and not smiling.

I'm pretty sure this family above is MEGA STOKED that they're daughter is getting hitched.

They just couldn't express it because they had to stay COMPLETELY STILL for a LONG time in order to get this gem of a photo.

Here are some of my photos experimenting with pinhole photography-they're kinda gnarly but hey this is an archaic form of photography, cut homegirl some slack.

ok, Amy is the shiz. She has 2 kids and *still* manages to find time to make all these cute DIY crafts, take photos of said DIY craft and blog about it.

• hang from your ceiling

I really hate the "Christmas Blues"

Ya know, the day after christmas and all that magic just seems kinda gone?

You get no more "magic" sent to you in the mail either, which means no more cards to add to your "Smash-Folio" from awesome bloggie friends (*ahem* I'm talk bout this lovely lady & this awesome gal)

It makes me feel all blob-esque.

I don't know how blobs feel per say, but I can imagine they don't feel awesome.

But you know what is awesome? Getting to look back at all your ballin' swag and reliving those memories again.

Brace yourself for one of the best frekkin gifts I have even gotten from the Bubs.

Oh hey, whats that?

That would be a hand painted locket made by this lil lady over here.

I found Khara's shop about a year ago and have swooned over her lockets about once a week since then. When it comes to jewelry I NEVER tell bubs what to get me. I want him to pick something out on his own that he thinks I would love, so that when I wear it I think of *him* and not me going to some bling bling shop and being all like "Yeah, that one--get that"

Mama doesn't need no sugar daddy.

But this year I did ask him to hit up Khara and work with her to put something sentimental inside of a locket for me. That way I knew I was getting a locket, but I had NO CLUE what would be on the inside.

And yes, the swings are so "Dawson's Creek" circa 1996 b/c Bubs and I had our first kiss on a swing set.

Consider myself impressed by Bub's decision on what to put inside.

What is even more mind blowing is that this locket is only, like, .5" wide (if that) and the fact that she can get THAT MUCH detail in such a tiny area is, well, unfathomable.

New Things for 2012!

Um hey 2011 where did you go?

Since you decided to up and leave on me I guess I'm gonna have to start prepping for 2012.

hopefully that doesn't mean making a bomb shelter and stocking up on MRE's

Like I know supposedly some serious shizznat is supposed to go down real bad according to the 'ol Mayans here, and all I gotta say is that I live on an Island so if we get hit with a tidal wave please just make it super fast.

But guys don't worry the end of the world is just going to have to wait--you see my car payments are FINALLY done in 2012 and I would like to know what it feels like to officially OWN a car. So Mr.Tidal wave you're just not wanted here.

Some other things I am prepping for 2012

• Finally lose some "love" weight (and by love I mean love handles, let's be honest, no one wants to hold onto those bad boys)

• Take Yellow Heart Art to the next level! (i have no idea what that means, so if you do I would gladly like your input-ha)

• To never stop lovin' up on the Bubs

• Volunteer my time doing *something* with bubs (whether it be habitat for humanity or spending time at an animal shelter) (and yes there is a really high possibility that if I opt for the animal shelter I'm going to own a puppy zoo) (you are all welcome to come & frolic with the puppies)

• Try a new craft

• Do something out of my comfort zone (I have already tried skiing, parasailing, & a crazy slingshot ride in atlantic city, just call me Evel Knievel)

• Meet some bloggie friends in fo-realz life

• Stop being so hard on myself

• To not spend more than $15 on shirts and $30 on bottoms. Also going to attempt to re-work my current wardrobe into new pieces of awesome wearable art.

Cold Hands, Warm Hearts

I am so excited to write up this blog post.

A month or so ago I was seeing tweets for something called "Cold Hands, Warm Hearts". After channeling my inner sherlock (and by inner sherlock I mean typing phrases into google) I found out that Cold Hands, Warm Hearts was a lil bloggie event that Ilene and Sandy hosted.

Basically, a bunch of bloggers sign up, Sandy and Ilene hook you up with a partner, and you swap a pair of gloves (or other goodies) with your new BFF.

When I got Kimmie from Sugar and Dots I was all like "whoa, jack pot". She's super sweet, super funny, and pretty sure we were separated at birth.

The second we found out we were each other's partner we instantly became besties. Our emails range in topics to attempting to bring back fanny packs to figuring out a way to make an all girl version of the 1990s hit rap group "Kriss Kross" (we would obviously keep the tradition alive of wearing our clothes "krissed krossed" by sporting our fanny packs backwards) (clearly) (please tell me you know who kriss kross is) (if not please take the next 3 minutes and 18 seconds to re-familiarize yourself) (you are welcome in advanced)

Christmas Traditions!

This weekend was busy busy BUSY

but also a ton of frekkin fun.

Last year bubs and I went into NYC to do the typical tourist-y stuff that one does when it comes to this time of year.

Last year we got a smooch by the tree:

and tried to recreate this magical moment this year as well, but it was an epic failure

yeah. can you appreciate that awesome bright blur of a tree in the background?

oh, you can't?

Thats cause when this picture was taken we were being shoved around by so many people, and we felt super awkward doin' the 'ol "hey let's take a photo of ourselves a la myspace circa 2001"

Not only did we see the tree, but we also hit up Bryant Park for THEE BEST frekkin hot chocolate that your tastebuds will ever experience.

Imagine taking a chocolate bar, melting it down, then drinking it.

Oh, and you know that feeling you get when you play with a pile of super cute adorable puppies? Thats how you will feel when you drink this amazing liquid wonder, times 10.

some things you should know about this photo, because I feel really bad misleading all you fine folks.

1. that jacket? it rocks, right? Oh, you noticed its a ski jacket? Yeah. I don't ski. The one time I did try to ski it ended terribly. Bub and I almost broke up and I ended up going down a hill "Matrix Style" at a 90* angle while my back dragged on the floor and my legs were bent with my skis on the snow "skiing" me down.

Never. Again.

2. why do I own a ski jacket? Well, it's on oakley jacket, and it retails for way over 200 bucks. I nabbed it in Marshals for 50 buck-a-roos.

Who wins? Me.

who also doesn't ski? Me.

3. See those cute leather light brown "toggle clasps" near my collar bone/chest area? Well, they're fake snaps. They dont do anything at all. How do we know this? While waiting for the train to take us into the city bub got antsy and startle to fiddle with my jacket. He wanted to see what the little toggle unsnapped to. It unsnaps to nothing. Now there is a .25" hole under my toggle.

Thanks bub.

4. Yes, said ripping of my jacket led to a fight.

Romantic.

5. Yes, I did try to rip his jacket back

caused a scene.

6. No I did not succeed.

darn.

7. he'll just have to sleep with one eye open--while wearing his jacket.

There are also vendors in Bryant Park, a TON of vendors that sell way awesome swag.

I nabbed a suh-weet leather wallet that has handmade artwork transferred onto it.

and got this super fun retro-tin prints for our new digs.

as you can see there was some serious compromising going on with these prints. I really love the retro look and bub, well, really dug the sayings.

Sigh.

Please dont show up to our apartment topless, you will not get free drinks.

what christmas traditions do you guys have?

Oh and my apologies for the photos-I was NOT schlepping my giant DSLR camera into the city during christmas time. It's heavy, its uncomfortable and not to mention really hard to operate while wearing mittens. Also New Yorkers hate it when they see people sporting these cameras, nothing screams OBNOXIOUS TOURIST ALERT then one of those puppies.

Works In Progress Wednesday! The "New Stuff!!" Edition

Now that we had to move the clocks back (or forward? I forget, I can't keep track of this stuff) by the time I get home from my full time graphic design gig there is ZERO daylight for me to take any photos of new swag I make for the shop!

This is so stinkin' stressful because every weekend I have to do an "anti-rain" dance to make sure the weather gods have mercy on me and have sunny skies for my product shots.

Didya know there was an "anti-rain" dance? Me either. Basically I just do "the sprinkler" repeatedly in our living room.

Bubs has learned to ignore any and every random action I do for now on.

Unsure if I am ok with this yet or not. But it seems to work for us.

But here is what I took pictures of this past weekend!

Works In Progress Wednesday! The "Nerdy" Edition

Whats super awesome about having an etsy shop and being a graphic designer is that I get to work with some really rad folks.

I have done designs for quite a few blog headers and etsy shop banners. What I love the most is that I get to be a part of these peoples little homes on cyber space by having my artwork live there! It never gets old and its a pretty fab feeling.

Here is what my week consists of:

• Wake up at 7:30am

• Work my Full Time Graphic Artist job till 5pm

• Come home, cook dinner

• Stop bub from eating cookies before dinner

• Tell bub to put down the toy helicopter and eat dinner
• Try to avoid the missels launching from said helicopter that are being aimed towards my head.

• Wash Dishes

• Do Laundry

• Create new art for the shop

• Make and Ship Orders

Sigh.

So on the weekends the LAST thing I want to do is work, cook or clean.

So this saturday we did a lil date.

Pretty sure in the last picture I was going "Steeeeeeeve" since he ran away from me and I had no clue where he was in the american flag jungle.

Oh, Steve? Thats Bub. I know, he has a legit name, who knew.

But don't I look so patriotic?

Works In Progress Wednesday! The "Pretty in Pink" Edition

I love anything girly. So When Laura came to me with her vision for what she wanted for her shop, Lillypie Accessories, I knew we were a match made in magical girly heaven.

She wanted something with my signature flowers but placed inside a banner.

annnd this is what I came up with!

I've worked with Olivia 2 times already in the past, so when she came back for a round 3 I was super stoked and honored to work with her again.

Olivia is graduating from college (HIGH 5 GIRL!) and wanted a quirky invitation to include in her announcement to family members.

She wanted a little story line with various fonts ((the blurred out sections are where Olivia is having her ceremony, didn't think she wanted me to blast all over cyber space where her par-taay was or else she would have a TON of guest show up ha! Have you heard of Thanks USA?

It's an organization that supplies scholarships to children of fallen soldiers.

Courtney started a shop on big cartel called "Thank You USA" where all the proceeds from her items will go towards this amazing cause.

She rounded up a bunch of handmade shop owners and asked them to donate. When she approached me I knew I wanted to be a part of this, no questions asked. With Bub being in the air force it really hit home for me.

Although I am so happy to be a part of such an amazing cause, it breaks my heart knowing that there are children out there with not one but *both* parents who are fallen soldiers of the war. My heart really truly goes out to them.

I hooked up Courtney with a product of mine that is only being sold at her shop. I made these super fun printable cupcake flags for thanks giving! Cause let's be honest, when you're slaving all day over the stove making a 45lb bird for your in laws who has time to make snazzy cupcakes? Well, now you do! Print out, cut out, glue to a toothpick and BAM thanksgiving is saved all thanks to you.

Friday Faves! The "I browsed my etsy faves" edition

It's weird, I have always loved etsy, but now since I have a shop on there I find myself stalking etsy like some sort of deranged hunger induce lioness hunting for prey.

Well, thats a visual there now isn't it?

I am so proud of myself, as much as I want to add all 438,957,675,109,348,947 items to my cart and exclaim WEEEEEE SHOPPING SPREE! I don't.

1. Tell us about your shop! We wanna know what made you want to start your online store, how you came up with your shop name and what kind of suh-weet awesome amazing products your 2 hands make!

In the Spring of 2010 friend of mine was hosting a charity event that sold art pieces. She knew I sewed/crafted/etc. so she asked me if I would donate some items to her event. I donated 10 headbands, some earrings, and a couple of pillow cases. The FLEW off the shelves. All in the name of charity... but still- they were gone with in 15 minutes of the event opening. So with the encouragement of my friends and family, I decided to open up shop. Since then, its been a wild ride.

2. What is your most favorite hand made item that you own?

from someone else's shop? hands down my gussy sews bag. It is roomy & the straps are SOOOO comfortable. TOTALLY worth the moolah! From my shop? every. single. one. of my infinity scarves. I could wear them all!!

3. What 3 items from your shop make you go "awww yeah I TOTALLY made that, and what?"

4. If you could hit someone in the face with a pie what flavor would the pie be? (you thought I was gonna ask who you would hit, didn't you?) (nope, I just really dig pie) (ok, I have a pie problem, judge me) (ok you can answer the question now)

uhhh what the what?? ha~ i love banana creme and that would be super fluffy and messy so probably that. And even though you didn't ask, I'd probably hit you in the face. Only to see your reaction... no hard feelings, I swear ;)

Works in Progress Wednesday! The "let it snow" edition

I love love love designing things for friends.

I love designing them more so when it involves thee most wonderful time of the year (and no, I'm not talking about the Victoria's Secret semi annual sale, although this is a glorious time of the year--one that my boobies thank me for)

I am talkin' bout the Holidays! Ya know, Chestnuts roasting on an open fire--the stockings hung from the fireplace with care--he knows when you are sleeping he knows when you're awake mumbo jumobo (ok, Santa knowing when I'm sleeping VS awake is kinda creepy--just stalk my facebook Santa, like all my High School friends & relatives do...)

When Jessica and Kim wanted handmade gift guides for their blogs I was all like "uhh heck yeah let's make it happen!"

Here is what I whipped up for Jessica:

It's Baaaack! SWAG SWAP WEEK!

Whats up loves! I'm not sure how many of you guys remember but Amy and I Hosted a "Swag Swap Week" back in May. What was swag swap week? Well, the cliff notes version is for one week participating handmade shops were able to trade their loot for other loot in other shops! It was a lot of fun & Amy and I made new bloggie friends from it. Best part? No one was assigned partners, you were able to swap with any of the participating shops!

I really really REALLY wanted to host another swag swap week before the holidays so people could squeeze in some holiday shopping. But being a handmade shop owner I realized it would be too much to try to keep up with inventory in my shop for my holiday customers as well as anyone who wanted to swap with me.

Alternative? Amy and I are going to host an "After Holidays Swag Swap Week". The pros? As a shop owner, you won't be stressed out making sure you meet the holiday deadlines with your customers *and* your swappers. Also? it's a great way to network and make more friends since we encourage everyone who is participating in the swap to blog about their loot!

Can we be real for a second? Who wants to stop giving/getting presents right after the holidays anyway?? And also, it'll give you a chance to nab some swag that you *really* wanted to get for the holidays but didn't get (I guess emailing the links to your hubs of what you wanted, and printing them out, highlighting them and leaving said print outs on the kitchen table wasn't as big of a hint as you thought it would be…)

Last time Swag Swap Week was only for handmade shop owners. A lot of people who didn't have a handmade biz wanted to know how to get in on the swap, so the lovely Lindsay had a genius idea. Now even if you don't have a handmade shop you too can participate! We are allowing people with popular blogs to swap "ad space" with handmade shop owners in return for their goods. We are encouraging that just people who DO NOT have a handmade biz to swap ad space, we know a lot of handmade biz owners also have popular blogs and do offer ad space as well so we really don't want this to turn into a "Swap-an-ad" week. So please let's leave the ad-space swapping to those with out shops :)

(ok, here is the pseudo sucky part) read ALL the Rules & Regulations below to see if you qualify!

That sounds pretty rad, how do I participate?!
You want in?! STOKED! This makes me squeal like a little school girl. Simply send an email to SwagSwapWeek {at} gmail.com with the subject line "Holiday Swag Swap Week". If you are a handmade shop owner please include your name, a link to your shop and a link to your blog. You may also include any other links such as your facebook and twitter accounts. If you are a popular blog author who wants to swap ad space please send us your name, your blog, and a SCREEN SHOT of your stats. We also need to know the number of followers on your blog, facebook and twitter accounts. Also please include your rates (ex: 1 month of ad space pricing, 3 months of ad space pricing, if it comes with a shop feature blog post and a giveaway etc) and what size buttons you would need from your partner. Please read rules and regulations below before emailing us, we want everyone to play nice on the Swag Swap Week playground! We want this to be as fun as possible.

Ok, I definitely want in, what rules are there for the Swag Swap Week playground?
First off there is no pushing and shoving on the monkey bars and no jumping off the swings (might break your neck) Ok, I'm getting to the point...I really dig bullet points (what? they're convenient, I know you dig em too!) so here they are in no particular order.

• Swag Swap Week will be going on from Sunday, January 15th 2012 and ending on Saturday, January 21st 2012. We are making it a week long so no one feels pressure to swap right away and it gives owners enough time to get their swappage on. Also we figured this was enough time to replenish your shops with new inventory after the holiday rush.

• You need to register with us by November 30th (you can do so by emailing either Amy or Myself at SwagSwapWeek {at} gmail.com) The registration ends early so I have enough time to create graphics for my blog of all the participating shops/blogs.

• All participating shops and blogs are asked to please blog and spread the news about all the new items they received in the swap. Please also include links to your swappers shop, blog, twitter, facebook and any other places to get in touch with them in your post :)

• Etsy, Big Cartel shop and Blog owners can participate (Sorry guys only U.S. shops and blogs for now)

• If you have an Etsy Shop you must have at least 20 positive ratings and 20 items for sale. (and no we don't mean 20 positive ratings out of 100--we ask this so that we don't have any "bad egg" shops who won't play nice! :) )

• Big Cartel shop owners: since there is no "rating system" on your shop you must supply us a link to your blog that has at least 50 followers. This is the only way we can tell that your items are "A-O-K". You also must have at least 20 items in your shop.

• It is not mandatory but we are highly encouraging shop owners to supply our readers with coupon codes to your shops. This will help gain traffic to your shop if someone not participating in the swap sees this blog post and digs your loot.

• It is also not mandatory to participate in a "swag swap week giveaway" but if anyone is expressing interest in giving away any items or store credit from their shops or if any blog owners want to giveaway ad space, then please let me know and we'll set up a blog post for a group giveaway.

• If you are a blog author you must email us a SCREEN SHOT of your blog stats as well as how many followers you have. Please also include your facebook and twitter following. Only certain blogs will be considered for swapping ads, we want our shop owners to get the best exposure out there. Also include your rates (ex: 1 month of ad space, 3 months of ad space, if it comes with a shop featured blog post and an optional giveaway)

There is a limit to the number of shops/blogs allowed to participate. We will have no more than 10 shops per category:

Art, Jewelry, Accessories, Home Decor, Bags & Purses, Baby & Kids, and Ad Space

Unsure if your shop fits one of those categories? No worries, here is what we are looking for.

ART: Graphic Design, Fine Art, Photography, Painting, Letterpress, Posters, Stationary, Cards

JEWELRY: Necklaces, earrings, broaches, bracelets, watches & rings. Since this is a popular category we will be putting "hair items" with accessories not jewelry.

ACCESSORIES: Scarves, Hair Accessories, Shoe Clips, Fashionable Clothing Items, Camera Strap Covers, Key Chains, Belts

HOME DECOR: Pillows, Towels, Linens, Coasters, Gadgets, Kitchen Accessories, 3-D Wall Art, Wreaths

BAGS & PURSES: Clutches, Totes, Wallets, Evening Bags, Camera Bags, Back Packs, Lunch Bags

Baby & Kids: Any of the categories above but geared towards children..although I don't know what baby will need a purse, but hey ya never know.

AD SPACE: Popular Blog Owners can Swap Ad Space with Handmade Shops, If you are a handmade shop owner who also supplies ad space on your blog we ask that you try to just trade your goods-we don't want this to turn into a "Swag swap ad week" haha <3

**if we can not fill up one category with at least 10 shops then we will consider adding more shops to the other categories to even it out**

• We want this to be an even playing field so there will be a screening process of your goods. We also do not want too many "similar" shops. For example: If you sell jewelry and make fabric rosettes and another shop contacts us who makes virtually the same item we will only pick one of the 2 stores to participate to keep it diverse. Sorry guys! We want to have a plethora of items but don't worry we'll do more swap weeks so just try again then :)

• We will periodically post on our blogs the participating shops/blogs for Swag Swap Week. We will keep updating the list when we get more entries. We will also supply you a button to add to your blog so you can let others know your are participating in the Swap. This will help get the word out and help have people out there who are not shop owners to see your stuff and potentially get new sales.

• Right before January 15th we will post a final list of all participating shops. If you are participating in the swap you are NOT ALLOWED to contact the shop/blog owners before hand. You must wait till the week the swap is taking place. We also ask that you supply us with an email address so we can include it on the list. This is how you will be communicating with other stores/blog owners participating in the swap.

• Once January 15th rolls around you are allowed to go shopping around and contacting shop owners/blog owners to work out a barter. THIS IS IMPORTANT PLEASE READ: Unfortunately if you really dig someone's shop/blog they might not feel the same way back. Both shop/blog owners must agree to the swap so if someone contacts you and you are not interested in their items/ad space you are not obligated to swap with them. Let's keep things nice though and please tell them gently that at this time you do not need their items/ad space.

• When you find a shop/blog that you want to swap with and you are BOTH in agreement then its up to the 2 of you to come to some sort of agreement. Amy and I ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS TRANSACTION. Whatever is said between you and other swappers stays between you and other swappers. We are not responsible for any items that may get lost or stolen. We are also not responsible for the actions of others participating in this swap. If you run into a problem with you and your swapper you must deal with it with them directly.

• In order to prevent one person from getting more out of the swap than the other we are setting a "difference limit". If the difference of the items in the swap is OVER $5 then the shop/blog owner who will be eating this cost has THE OPTION to send a bill to the other swapper via paypal to pay the difference. YOU MUST LET THE PERSON KNOW AHEAD OF TIME IF YOU ARE BILLING THEM THE DIFFERENCE. If it is under $5 this action can not be done. You also can NOT charge your swapper for shipping fees (which works out anyway because you are both paying shipping fees for your own items that you are shipping) Please also note we are NOT RESPONSIBLE for whatever transaction happens between you and your swapper. Any problems or questions must be dealt directly with the person you are swapping with.

• The 2 swappers must make an agreement upon when each other should be expecting their goods. Someone like me who prints out graphic prints can get items out sooner than someone who has to make 10 hand bags. So be understanding of one another guys :) Also people who are trading ad space for goods must let their swapper know when their ad will run.

• There is no limit to how many shops/blogs you want to swap with-go crazy and have fun! But please be respectful of other shop owners who do not want to swap back, they might just be getting too many requests and unfortunately can not accept all of them :)

• After you are registered we will look over your shop/blog to make sure you meet the criteria. You will hear back from either Amy or I in 5-7 business days after we received your email to let you know if you are a candidate for Swag Swap Week. If you are not chosen it does not mean we don't like your stuff! There might already by a participating shop/blog that has similar items to you or we have already met our quota.

Here are some Benefits!
• We are asking everyone who decides to participate in the swap to blog about the products that they received. This helps to get exposure to your store. Also any bloggers who are giving away ad space we would love for them to please blog about the products they received!

• Great opportunity to test out other store's products before you commit to an ever bigger purchase from them

• An opportunity to meet other "handmade" folks and grow a network with people.

• The items being swapped don't necessarily have to be for you! You can even swap items that you can see giving away as gifts!

• We will also include on our blogs links to your shop, blog, twitter and facebook accounts--giving you free exposure!
